Along the poplars odd …
Enjoy it!
Along the poplars odd I, slow,
So many times have passed;
You haven’t recognized me though
All neighbors have, at last.
I’ve watched so often how the glow
Adorned your window’s frame;
You haven’t understood me though,
Whole people have, with shame.
How did I wait so many times
A word from you to grasp!
A day with me if you’d have spent
And could’ve been the last;
An hour if we could be friends
And share our love so kind,
To sip your lips and squeeze your hands,
Then dying wouldn’t mind.
By giving me from your blue eyes
A spark of love untorn,
On pathway of the coming times
A star would’ve been born;
So you forever would’ve lived
Entire rows of lives,
And gracefully you would’ve framed
With your seraphic arms
A face adored eternal as
Would have in dreamy minds
Those fairies struggling to traverse
From the forgotten times.
I loved you with some heathen eyes
With sorrow filled inside,
Which from the ancestors in skies
I got to inherit.
Today I even don’t regret
I seldom step this way,
And neither that I see your head
How sadly turns away.
For now like everyone you look
When walk and how you dress;
I careless watch you from a nook
With some cold eyes of dead.
You should’ve been the one that through
The holy charm goes forth,
And votive light to kindle to
Eternal love on earth.
Adesea am trecut;
Mã cunoşteau vecinii toţi –
Tu nu m-ai cunoscut.
La geamul tãu ce strãlucea
Privii atât de des;
O lume toatã-nţelegea –
Tu nu m-ai înţeles.
De câte ori am aşteptat
O şoaptã de rãspuns!
O zi din viaţã sã-mi fi dat,
O zi mi-era de-ajuns;
O orã sã fi fost amici,
Sã ne iubim cu dor,
S-ascult de glasul gurii mici
O orã şi sã mor.
Dându-mi din ochiul tãu senin
O razã dinadins,
În calea trimpilor ce vin
O stea s-ar fi aprins;
Ai fi trãit în veci de veci
Şi rânduri de vieţi,
Cu ale tale braţe reci
Înmãrmureai mãreţ,
Un chip de-a pururi adorat
Cum nu mai au perechi
Acele zâne ce strãbat
Din timpurile vechi.
Cãci te iubeam cu ochi pãgâni
Şi plini de suferinţi,
Ce mi-i lãsarã din bãtrâni
Pãrinţii din pãrinţi.
Azi nici mãcar îmi pare rãu
Cã trec cu mult mai rar,
Cã cu tristeţã capul tãu
Se-ntoarce în zadar.
Cãci azi le semeni tuturor
La umblet şi la port,
Şi te privesc nepãsãtor
C-un rece ochi de mort.
Tu trebuia sã te cuprinzi
De acel farmec sfânt,
Şi noaptea candelã s-aprinzi
Iubirii pe pãmânt.
Our love has fled…
Our love has fled, a faithful friend
To both of us the same,
So to my love-songs I can send
Good-bye, to all of them.
Inside the chest of drawers locked
By cold oblivion’s hand,
They whisper on my lips will not,
Nor sparkle on my head.
Too much blue sky, too many stars
And murmur from the spring,
And such a melancholic love
Is all that they can bring!
From which forgotten distant heap
They blossomed into me!
And how I wet them with my weep,
My darling, just for thee!
How hard their turmoil to traverse
From deepest grief I felt,
And how I’m sorry, I confess,
That I’m not feeling yet!
For you no longer want to be
My guiding light from depth
Because your eyes are dark like thee
And resurrect the death!
No longer give your humble smile
Or show your gentle face
Thus into dream to change my life,
A life my dream to make.
So you could grow into my thoughts
As soon as moon will rise
Like shade of charming tales of those
One thousand and one nights.
A dream so mystical and sweet –
It was beyond the speech!
And it was far too good so we
Aspired but couldn’t reach.
Too much an angel to my eye
You were and less a she,
And therefore happiness did fly
Because it couldn’t be.
Too much we’ve lost our eager soul,
And deeply in its lure;
Too much forgot the God and all
For this to be a cure.
Perhaps there is no place in this
Absurd, unworthy world
For something that the pain could leash,
For such a love untold!
Mai jos versiunea originala a lui Eminescu. Enjoy! 🙂
S-a dus amorul…
S-a dus amorul, un amic
Supus amândurora,
Deci cânturilor mele zic
Adio tutuurora.
Uitarea le închide-n scrin
Cu mâna ei cea rece,
Și nici pe buze nu-mi mai vin,
Și nici prin gând mi-or trece.
Atâta murmur de izvor,
Atât senin de stele,
Și un atât de trist amor
Am îngropat în ele!
Din ce noian îndepărtat
Au răsărit în mine!
Cu câte alcrimi le-am udat,
Iubito, pentru tine!
Cum străbăteau atât de greu
Din jalea mea adâncă,
Și cât de mult îmi pare rău
Că nu mai sufăr încă!
Că nu mai vrei să te arăți
Lumină de-ndeparte,
Cu ochii tăi întunecați
Renăscători de moarte!
Și cu acel smerit surâs,
Cu acea blândă față,
Să faci din viața mea un vis,
Din visul meu o viață.
Să mi se pară cum că crești
De cum răsare luna,
În umbra dulcilor povești
Din nopți o mie una.
Era un vis misterios,
Și blând din cale-afară,
Și prea era de tot frumos
De-au trebuit să piară.
Prea mult un înger mi-ai părut
Și prea puțin femeie,
Ca fericirea ce-am avut
Să fi putut să steie.
Prea ne pierdusem tu și eu
În al ei farmec poate,
Prea am uitat de Dumnezeu,
Precum uitarăm toate.
Și poate că nici este loc
Pe-o lume de mizerii
Pentr-un atât de sfânt noroc
Străbătător durerii!
From heavenly horizons
Translated after Mihai Eminescu
From heavenly horizons
The evening stars would shake
To smile at our sweet love
And at the waves from lake.
By singing birds that shelters
The wood is lost in thoughts.
Oh, trembling stars, oh, trembling stars,
Where have you gone?
In travelling herds are passing
The giant clouds insane.
They seem alike depressing
And melancholic pain.
By glittering of flowers
The field is overwhelmed.
Oh, shady clouds, oh, shady clouds,
Where have you gone?
The airly nightly whispers
From shore to shore when sail
Is when the moonlight’s pictures
Will shine on every wave.
Your eyes from which the love sparks
I have remembered now.
Oh, sweet moonlight, oh, sweet moonlight,
Where have you gone?
As luring ivy clambers
The branches of the oak,
There was a time I loved her
And her, again, I love.
Your arms that made me sighing
I have remembered now.
Oh, graceful arms, oh, graceful arms,
Where have you gone?
Traducerea in romana:
Din cerurile-albastre
Din cerurile-albastre
Luceferi se desfac,
Zâmbind iubirii noastre
Și undelor din lac.
De glasul păsărelelor
Pe gînduri codru-i pus.
O, stelelor, stelelor,
Unde v-ați dus?
În turme călătoare
Trec nourii pe ceri,
Ce seamăn pieritoare
Duioaselor dureri.
De strălucirea florilor
E câmpul tot răpus.
O, norilor, norilor,
Unde v-ați dus?
Șoptiri aeriane
Pătrund din mal în mal
Ș-a stelelor icoane
Pre fiecare val.
De ochii tăi cei plini de-amor
Aminte mi-am adus.
O, stelelor, stelelor,
Unde v-ați dus?
Cum iedera se leagă
De ramuri de stejar,
Mi-a fost odată dragă
Și dragă-mi este iar.
De brațul tău cuprins cu dor
Aminte mi-am adus.
O, brațelor, brațelor,
Unde v-ați dus?
Out of the waves of ages…
Translated after “Din valurile vremii” by M. Eminescu
Out of the waves of ages, my darling, please, do rise
With long and golden tresses, with marble-made-like arms.
And with your face transparent, as wax transparent is,
Which weakened is by shadow of melancholic grieves!
With charming smile you caress my eyes, my spirit’s scars,
True star among all women and woman among stars!
And when your face you’re turning I see your eyes so deep
That happiness abducts me and, watching you, I weep.
And from the heap of darkness, how could I snatch you out
To lift you to my bosom? Oh, angel sweet, beloved!
My face with tears bathed, on yours to lower down
And with my fiery kisses, your rousing breath to drown.
Your hands with cold enchanted, to warm against my chest
And closer, even closer, upon my heart to rest.
However, you’re not real if so you pass and spark
And thus is lost your shadow into the frozen dark;
And so again I smoulder with helpless lowered arms,
When lonely I remember the dream with grievous charms…
My arms I vainly lower and stretch to grasp your shade:
Out of the waves of ages your shadow’s getting vague!
Kamadeva
Translated after Kamadeva by Mihai Eminescu
With de sorrows of the fondness
I have tried my soul to cure;
Therefore in my sleep I called on
Kamadeva, god of lure.
The child came astride a parrot,
Lofty as a god he is,
A deceitful smile displaying
On his coral-sculptured lips.
Between wings, into his quiver,
Had instead of arrows kept,
Flowers envenomed with passions
From magnificent Ganges picked.
With his bow he loosed a flower,
Stuck it right into my soul;
Ever since I cried, was hopeless,
Couldn’t sleep at night at all…
With the wrath of poisoned arrow
Came to throw me to confusion
The proud progeny of heaven
And of desert, vain illusion.
Kamadeva, zeul indic.
El veni, copilul mândru,
Cãlãrind un papagal,
Având zâmbetul fãţarnic
Pe-a lui buze de coral.
Aripi are, iar în tolbã-i
El pãstreazã, ca sãgeţi,
Numai flori înveninate
De la Gangele mãreţ.
Puse-o floare-atunci în arcu-i,
Mã lovi cu ea în piept,
Şi de-atunci în orice noapte
Plâng pe patul meu deştept…
Cu sãgeata-i otrãvitã
A sosit ca sã mã certe
Fiul cerului albastru
Şi-al iluziei deşerte.
A final wish I raise
Translated after M. Eminescu’s “Mai am un singur dor”
A final wish I raise:
In evening’s emotion
To have my death embraced
At edge of the ocean;
To have my sleep in love,
And near the forest,
And waters the closest,
With spotless sky above.
Don’t need expensive casket
Nor any flags of dead;
A bier wish instead,
From twigs entirely crafted.
And none of you deplore
My mute disappearance,
The autumn leaves when fall
Will sigh from the distance.
When noisy springs will flow
To follow the river,
The moonlight will shiver
With tops of firs below.
The bells from the sheepfold
May blend with evening breath,
The linden tree may spread
Its snow on my pillow.
As tramp I will on earth
No longer appear,
I’ll keep, this second birth,
The memories near.
And evening stars which rise
From shade of the branches,
With feelings of friendship,
Again will send their smiles.
By passions incited,
Will groan the seas, at last…
I’ll be already dust,
By loneliness guided.
Aşa cum v-am obişnuit, mai jos varianta originală:
Mai am un singur dor
Mai am un singur dor:
În liniştea serii
Sã mã lãsaţi sã mor
La marginea mãrii;
Sã-mi fie somnul lin
Şi codrii aproape,
Pe-ntinsele ape
Sã am un cer senin.
Nu-mi trebuie flamuri,
Nu voi sicriu bogat,
Ci-mi împletiţi un pat
Din tinere ramuri.
Şi nime-n urma mea
Nu-mi plângã la creştet,
Doar toamna glas sã dea
Frunzişului veşted.
Pe când cu zgomot cad
Izvoarele-ntr-una,
Alunece luna
Prin vârfuri lungi de brad.
Pãtrunzã talanga
Al serii rece vânt,
Deasuprã-mi teiul sfânt
Sã-şi scuture creanga.
Cum n-oi mai fi pribeag
De-atunci înainte,
M-or troieni cu drag
Aduceri aminte.
Luceferi, ce rãsar
Din umbra de cetini,
Fiindu-mi prietini,
Or sã-mi zâmbeascã iar.
Va geme de patemi
Al mãrii aspru cant…
Ci eu voi fi pãmânt
În singurãtate-mi.
Prince Charming from linden tree
Prince Charming from linden tree
“Blanca, from your feeble childhood
You were sworn as bride to Lord,
For your born fortuitous happened
From unworthy, sinful love.
For Saint Ann we’ll leave tomorrow,
Where in prayers you shall mention
Solace to your own existence,
To my empty soul redemption.
“Father, I am not delighted
My romantic soul to squander!
I am fond of playing, haunting;
Others may those things abandon.
I shall not renounce my tresses
Down to ankles, nor get rotten
Blind and reading withered pages
Into incense smoke forgotten.”
“I know best for you what’s proper,
Drive away your lay ideas
To the old abode of prayer
We shall start as dawn appears.”
Lost, she listened – cried with sorrow,
By elopement thoughts abducted;
By a strange and nameless longing
And a desert lure attracted.
Weeping she began to saddle
Her enchanting silver stallion
Which was following her movements
As a faithful, mute companion.
And astride of it she vanished
Flying through the wind as blind,
Didn’t bother looking forward,
Didn’t even look behind.
Twisted paths in endless forest
She was struggling to descend
When the crimson beams of sunset
Brought the twilight to the end.
Now and then within the forest
Shade was flashed by nightly sparkling
While she stepped through rustling foliage
As the bees were friendly buzzing.
In the middle of the forest
Near the tall and ancient linden
Stopped her stallion close to spring that
Made a pleasant sound to listen.
Suddenly she started woken
By the tender wail of water.
Thus she saw a handsome youngster
Which on horseback was aside her.
He was gazing her astonished
With his big and dreamy eye,
With his linden on dark tresses
And with silver horn on thigh
From which faintly loosed a wailing
Rending as a grievous blaze –
So her pure heart swelled with longing
Of delightful stranger’s face.
With his own he touched her tresses
Then she blushed and felt the skies
When she left her lashes falling
Over shy-behaving eyes.
She displayed with charming features
On her frozen lips a smile
Which her eager mouth, through whispers,
Hardly opened for a while.
When she overwhelmed surrendered
And towards him bent her face,
He ceased horn’s hypnotic wailing
And spoke trifles full of grace.
When he climbed her on his horseback
She opposed him with a hand,
Yet forwent, her heart was beating
With a funny feelings blend.
Laying on the grass she pointed
Upwards to his face her sight;
They were smiling while the horses
Grazed together, side by side.
Only the romantic mumur
Of enchanted spring along
Melancholically deafened
Their so drunken souls with love.
Then the Moonlight showed her glamour
And the night itself admired
How she painted darkened shadows
On the stubbles silver-coloured.
And she lenghtens them and shifts them,
Gradually as she ascends,
But the youngsters lose their traces
Through the woods that never ends.
At the castle gate, the stallion,
Stood the next day, whole in foam,
But his tender, charming mistress
Was eloped and far from home.
Eu iubesc vânatul, jocul;
Traiul lumii alţii lese-l.
Nu voi părul să mi-l taie,
Ce-mi ajunge la călcâie,
Să orbesc cetind pe carte
În fum vânăt de tămâie.
– Ştiu mai bine ce-ţi prieşte,
Las’ de-a lumii orice gând,
Mâni în zori de zi pleca-vom
Către schitul vechi şi sfânt.
Ea aude – plânge. Parcă
Îi venea să plece-n lume,
Dusă de pustie gânduri
Şi de-un dor fără de nume.
Şi plângând înfrână calul,
Calul ei cel alb ca neaua,
Îi netează mândra coamă
Şi plângând îi pune şeaua.
S-avântă pe el şi pleacă,
Păru-n vânturi, capu-n piept,
Nu se uită înainte-i,
Nu priveşte îndărăpt.
Pe cărări pierdute-n vale
Merge-n codri făr’ de capăt,
Când a serii raze roşii
Asfinţind din ceruri scapăt.
Umbra-n codri ici şi colo
Fulgerează de lumine…
Ea trecea prin frunza-n freamăt
Şi prin murmur de albine;
În mijloc de codru-ajunse
Lângă teiul nalt şi vechi,
Unde-izvorul cel în vrajă
Sună dulce în urechi.
De murmur duios de ape
Ea trezită-atunci tresare,
Vede-un tânăr, ce alături
Pe-un cal negru stă călare.
Cu ochi mari la ea se uită,
Plini de vis, duioşi plutind,
Flori de tei în păru-i negru
Şi la şold un corn de-argint.
Şi-ncepu încet să sune,
Fermecat şi dureros –
Inima-i creştea de dorul
Al străinului frumos.
Părul lui i-atinge părul,
Şi atunci c-obrazul roş
Ea apleacă gene lunge
Peste ochii cuvioşi.
Iar pe buze-i rece-un zâmbet
Înecat, fermecător,
Care gur-abia-i deschide,
Cea uscată de amor.
Când cu totului răpită
Se-ndoi spre el din şele,
El înceată din cântare
Şi-i grăi cu grai de jele,
Ş-o cuprinde de călare –
Ea se apără c-o mână,
Însă totuşi lui se lasă,
Simte inima că-i plină.
Şi pe umărul lui cade
Al ei cap cu faţa-n sus;
Pe când caii pasc alături,
Ea-l privea cu suflet dus.
Numai murmurul cel dulce
Din izvorul fermecat
Asurzeşte melancolic
A lor suflet îmbătat.
Lun-atunci din codri iese,
Noapte toată stă s-o vadă,
Zugrăvește umbre negre
Pe câmp alb ca de zăpadă.
Şi mereu ea le lungește,
Şi urcând pe cer le mută,
Dar ei trec, se pierd în codri
Cu viaţa lor pierdută.
La castel în poartă calul
Stă a doua zi în spume,
Dar frumoasa lui stăpână
A rămas pierdută-n lume.
